Where to Stay in Istanbul: A Neighbourhood Guide
Sultanahmet, Beyoğlu, Beşiktaş, Kadıköy or Karaköy? An honest neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood guide for first-time visitors to Istanbul.
Choosing the right neighbourhood matters more in Istanbul than in most cities — the metropolis is huge, traffic is heavy, and a poor location can cost you hours every day. Here is our local take.
Sultanahmet — best for first-timers
Walking distance to Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı, the Grand Bazaar and the tram. Lots of mid-range hotels and boutique guesthouses in restored Ottoman houses. Quiet at night, very touristy by day. Choose a hotel on a side street to avoid the morning call to prayer if you are a light sleeper.
Karaköy & Galata — best for design lovers
A 15-minute walk over the Galata Bridge from Sultanahmet, this is Istanbul's most stylish quarter. Specialty coffee, boutique hotels, art galleries and the city's best contemporary dining. Walkable to both old city and Beyoğlu.
Beyoğlu (Taksim/İstiklal) — best for nightlife
Around Taksim Square and İstiklal Avenue. Liveliest area for bars, live music, late-night meyhanes, and shopping. Great for younger travellers but can be noisy. Avoid hotels directly on Tarlabaşı Boulevard or in side streets you are unsure about.
Beşiktaş & Nişantaşı — best for upscale calm
Polished, residential, fashionable. Beşiktaş has the Bosphorus, ferries to the Asian side, and Dolmabahçe Palace nearby. Nişantaşı is the city's luxury shopping district. Quieter at night, slightly less walkable to Sultanahmet (use the tram).
Kadıköy (Asian side) — best for repeat visitors
If you have been to Istanbul before and want to live like a local, stay in Kadıköy. Authentic restaurants, modern cafés, a vibrant young scene, and a quick ferry to the old city. Not ideal for a 3-day first trip.
Bosphorus villages — best for romance
Bebek, Arnavutköy, Ortaköy and Sarıyer offer water views, fish restaurants and a slower pace. A taxi to Sultanahmet is 30–45 minutes depending on traffic. Best for travellers staying a week or more.
Avoid for a short trip
- Near the airports — convenient for one-night stopovers only.
- Şişli — modern business district, lacks atmosphere.
- Outer Asian side suburbs — too far for daily sightseeing.
Our recommendation
