5 Days in Istanbul: The Perfect First-Time Itinerary
A balanced, walkable 5-day Istanbul itinerary covering Sultanahmet, the Bosphorus, the Asian side, Beyoğlu nightlife and the Princes Islands.
Five days in Istanbul is enough to see the headline sights without rushing — if you plan well. This is the itinerary we recommend to first-time visitors.
Day 1 — Sultanahmet: the empires
Start at Hagia Sophia at opening time (9am) to beat the crowds. Cross Sultanahmet Square to the Blue Mosque (check prayer times). After lunch at a kebab restaurant on Divanyolu, head to the Basilica Cistern. Finish the afternoon at Topkapı Palace — give yourself at least 2.5 hours. Dinner with a sunset view from a Sultanahmet rooftop.
Day 2 — Grand Bazaar & Spice Bazaar
Morning at the Grand Bazaar (closed Sundays). Walk down to the Süleymaniye Mosque for the best view in the old city. Lunch at a kuru fasulye specialist nearby. Afternoon at the Spice Bazaar and a stroll through Eminönü. Evening: dinner cruise on the Bosphorus or a Turkish hammam.
Day 3 — Bosphorus & Beyoğlu
Take a Bosphorus cruise in the morning — ideally one that includes both bridges and a stop on the Asian side. Afternoon in Beyoğlu: walk down İstiklal Avenue, ride the historic tram, see Galata Tower at sunset. Dinner at a meyhane in Asmalımescit with rakı and mezes.
Day 4 — Asian side day trip
Ferry to Kadıköy from Eminönü or Karaköy. Browse the Kadıköy market, take the nostalgic tram to Moda for a tea by the sea, then walk to Üsküdar in the late afternoon. Maiden's Tower at sunset is unforgettable. Return ferry to Karaköy for dinner.
Day 5 — Princes' Islands or Bosphorus villages
In summer: a full-day ferry to Büyükada, the largest Princes' Island. Rent bicycles, swim, and lunch on fresh fish. Off-season: explore the Bosphorus villages of Arnavutköy, Bebek and Rumeli Hisarı, finishing dinner in Ortaköy under the bridge.
Practical tips
- Get an İstanbulkart from any airport or metro station — it works on metros, trams, buses and ferries.
- Wear comfortable shoes. Sultanahmet is cobbled and hilly.
- Carry a scarf if visiting mosques (women cover heads, men cover knees).
- Always carry some cash — small lokantas and ferries are easier with lira.
