Istanbul is a year-round destination, but the city changes character with the seasons. Here is what to expect month by month — written by locals who live here, not generic travel copy.

Spring (April–May): the sweet spot

Many travellers consider April and May the best time to visit Istanbul. Daytime temperatures sit between 15–22 °C, the Judas trees along the Bosphorus burst into pink bloom, and the tulip festival fills Gülhane and Emirgan parks with millions of flowers. Crowds are manageable, hotel prices are moderate, and walking the Sultanahmet peninsula is genuinely pleasant.

Summer (June–August): hot, busy, alive

Summer brings 28–32 °C heat, humidity, and the largest tourist crowds of the year. The upside: long daylight hours, lively rooftop bars, summer concerts at open-air venues like Harbiye Cemil Topuzlu, and Bosphorus swimming days at Suada Club. Book hammams, dinner cruises and rooftop restaurants several days ahead.

Autumn (September–November): the local favourite

September and October are arguably even better than spring. The summer rush eases, temperatures cool to 18–25 °C, and the Bosphorus light turns golden in late afternoon — perfect for cruises and photography. November begins to cool and rain returns, but the city is uncrowded.

Winter (December–February): atmospheric and affordable

Istanbul winters average 5–10 °C, with occasional snow that briefly turns Hagia Sophia into a postcard. Indoor experiences shine: Turkish hammams, covered bazaars, art museums, and long Ottoman dinners. Prices for hotels and flights are at their lowest, and queues at major monuments almost disappear.

Religious holidays to know

  • Ramadan — restaurants are quieter during daylight but evenings come alive with iftar feasts.

  • Eid (Bayram) holidays — public transport is free, but hotels fill with domestic tourists. Book early.

Our recommendation

For first-time visitors: aim for mid-April to late May or mid-September to mid-October. For budget travel and a quieter city: January and February. For nightlife and beach trips to the Princes' Islands: June and July.

Whatever month you choose, our Istanbul team can arrange tours, Bosphorus cruises, and hammam bookings tailored to the season.
